EUDR: What your business needs to know and how to prepare

EUDR – what do the new requirements mean for your business?

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is part of the EU’s efforts to reduce deforestation and forest degradation worldwide. It requires certain commodities and products to be traceable and to meet specific conditions before they can be imported into, placed on the EU market or exported from the EU.

The regulation covers cattle, cocoa, coffee, oil palm, rubber, soya and wood, as well as a range of products made from these commodities. Whether a product is covered depends, among other things, on its commodity code and product description as listed in Annex I to the regulation.

Under the current timetable, the rules will apply from 30 December 2026 to large and medium-sized companies, as well as certain smaller companies in the timber sector. For other micro and small companies, the start date is 30 June 2027.

How to prepare

To reduce the risk of delays and help ensure that your customs processes run smoothly, it is worth reviewing your company’s procedures now.

We recommend that you:

  • Map your goods flows to identify whether any of your products are covered by the EUDR.
  • Clarify your company’s responsibilities and your role under the regulation, for example as an operator or a downstream operator.
  • Prepare the necessary documentation and ensure that the relevant information and reference numbers are available before importing or exporting.
  • Review your customs procedures and establish which declaration details, C-codes and any applicable exemption codes (Y-codes) should be used for your goods.

The obligations that apply depend, among other things, on the type of product and how it has entered or been handled on the EU market. It is therefore important to assess each relevant goods flow in light of your company’s actual role in the supply chain.
